This weekend, I did something I hadn’t done in years, a 5K (3 miles)

As someone who works in tech (and from home most days), I rarely clock more than 5,000 steps a day. I know, I should do better! So when my friend Michael invited me to the Corporate Classic 5K at City Park in New Orleans, I hesitated.

But then I remembered my Air Force ROTC days and figured, how hard could it be?

The morning of the run, I met Michael literally two minutes before it started. I was still putting on my shirt and bib as we made our way to the runners’ section. In hindsight, I should’ve stayed with the joggers and walkers because I quickly found myself pausing to let others pass.

Still, there was something refreshing about it all:

  • The “pothole edition” of the course that made everyone laugh.
  • A kid on the side of the path contemplating life mid-run.
  • People twice my age powering through with determination.

By the final stretch, every step felt the same. First mile, second, third until I finally crossed the finish line. The cheers, the medals, and the post-race celebration with food, drinks, and music made it all worth it.

Reflection

The run reminded me of something I often apply at Aperca LLC: progress happens in steady steps. Whether it’s building tools, testing systems, or improving workflows, the key is consistency. You might not see results at the first mile but if you keep going, you’ll get there.

So here’s to small wins in code, in work, and on the pavement.

Next time, I might even run the whole thing.
